My wife Susie (Lipschutz) Schneider and I moved away from Detroit to East Lansing in the summer of 1970 and never really looked back. I finished my Ph.D. in 1973 (Sociology of Education at Michigan State), and we stayed for an extra year when I got a temporary Assistant Professorship. In 1974, we moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where I taught Sociology of Education and Urban Studies at Brown University. While we were in Providence, Susie taught at the Wheeler School. Our children, Diane and Joey, therefore, had several years of “old fashioned” New England Prep School education. We then moved to Washington in 1980, so I could start a grant program in Desegregation Research at the National Institute of Education.
When we got to Washington, Susie changed her career path and went to work for the Department of the Army, which eventually led to her to spend 25 years writing Procurement Policy for the Office of the Secretary of Defense. I changed jobs a couple of times and wound up (spending 20+ years) as a Senior Policy Analyst at the National Education Association (doing research and developing programs on how to create quality schools). We both retired a couple of years ago and, except for a little consulting, we have spent our time doing anything we want, traveling a lot in Europe, attending CAPS games, and watching our grandchildren (Sarah - 7, Sydney - 7, Leah - 5, and Jeff – 5) grow-up.
We live in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, with our dog, Alex “Ovechkin” Schneider. Both of our children live in Northern Virginia. Diane and her family live 100 steps from our front door, and Joe lives close to Dulles Airport. Diane is a project manager at The Department of Homeland Security, and Joe manages international intelligence work for government agencies. They cannot (or will not) tell us what they do, but that is OK – I think we would rather not know.
